Embracing Independence

The Journey of a Paralegal Entrepreneur

Living in France, I not only anticipate the festivities of July 4th, but also the Bastille Day celebrations on July 14th. These commemorations serve as poignant reminders of the broader implications of independence.

I find myself reflecting on my own journey towards financial and professional freedom. Five years ago, I embarked on an entrepreneurial venture - establishing my paralegal consulting business while juggling the demands of a full-time job and family. This path was far from linear. It was dotted with pauses and detours as I occasionally sought the elusive promise of financial security through traditional employment.

Despite the challenges, for the last two years I have dedicated myself entirely to nurturing my business. While I may not be basking in wealth, I am far from destitution. I am in a state of steady sustenance and growth, navigating the ebb and flow of self-employment with resilience, determination, and the occasional comfort of too much ice cream.

Along the way I have learned a few things that have become the bedrock of my persistence:

Independence, in its essence, is about self-determination. It’s about the power to shape one’s destiny and the courage to pursue a path less traveled. In truth, there are days when I don't feel very powerful or brave. I’m well aware that my road to professional autonomy will be bumpy and imperfect, but I am committed to navigating the challenges in order to build a fulfilling and sustainable career that not only meets my professional goals but also enriches my personal life.

So in this season of liberation, let's think about what independence means to us. Let's find the strength and wisdom to create our own paths, and the spirit to embrace the journey, imperfections and all.
